1. PM gives away Swachh Bharat Awards on Gandhi Jayanti
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, on the third anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Swachh Bharat Diwas, and the conclusion of Swachhata Hi Seva fortnight, gave away the Swachh Bharat National Awards at a ceremony organised by Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) in New Delhi. Awards were given to winners of essay, film and painting competitions organised as part of Swachh Sankalp se Swachh Siddhi.
The event marked the culmination of a national campaign titled “Swachhata Hi Seva” that the MDWS had organized in response to the clarion call given by the Prime Minister to citizens of India to contribute to improvement of sanitation status in the country in the run up to Gandhi Jayanti.
2. Rajghat gets Mahatma Statue, for the first time
Rajghat, the Samadhi of the Father of the Nation in the national capital , has for the first time acquired a new feature that could appeal to the large number of visitors. Vice-President of India Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu today unveiled a 1.80 metre tall bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of the 148 Birth Anniversary of the champion of country’s independence.
The statue, sculpted by the renowned Shri Ram Sutar is installed in the Parking Area of Rajghat Samadhi Complex at a cost of Rs.8.73 lakhs. It is mounted on a two feet high pedestal clad with granite. The famous message of Gandhi ji “Be the Change You Wish to See” is inscribed on the front side of the pedestal. Installation of the Statue is a part of a large number of improvement works at Rajghat undertaken during the last three years.
3. “WALKATHON” for Older Persons at India Gate to mark ‘International Day of Older Persons’
To mark the ‘International day of Older Persons’ on 2nd October, more than 5000 participants gathered at India Gate for a noble cause to spread the message of caring and giving respect to older persons and senior citizens. This year’s theme was “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.
Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment along with the Minister of State Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar, took the pledge with other dignitaries and 5000 participants. Then the “Walkathon” was flagged off by Shri Thawarchand Gehlot & MOS Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar and they also took part in 1 km Walkathon with all the dignitaries.
4. Nitish Kumar launches campaign to end dowry, child marriage
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today launched a statewide campaign to abolish child marriage and dowry, drawing strength from the campaign he had launched last year to make the state alcohol-free. On January 21 this year, Bihar had formed the world's largest human chain, as per the government's claim, in support of the liquor ban with Kumar, leaders from various political parties and citizens holding each other's hands at the Gandhi Maidan in the state capital here.
Kumar appealed to all the sections of the society to put an end to social evils such as child marriage and dowry and not politicise them.
5. Five more states have ODF cities and towns
Five states -- Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Haryana -- have been able to make all their urban areas "open-defecation free". In a programme on the third anniversary of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, it is noticed that about 38 lakh household toilets in urban areas have already been built against a target of 66 lakh, and another 14 lakh toilets are under construction.
Efforts are on to generate over 500 MW of electricity and over 50 lakh tonnes of compost from municipal solid waste in order to process the entire solid waste generated in urban areas.
6. Mary Kom, Sarita in Asian Championships squad
M C Mary Kom was back in her preferred 48kg category as she staved off the challenge from younger competitors to clinch a place in the Indian team for Asian Women's Boxing Championship in Vietnam.
After three days of gruelling trials here, during which some boxers ended up fighting two bouts in one day, the veteran duo of Mary Kom and L Sarita Devi (64kg) made the cut despite trying their luck in changed weight categories. The marquee continental event is scheduled from November 2 to 11 in the Ho Chi Minh City. Mary Kom, a five-time world champion who had jumped a division to 51kg back in 2010 after it was included in the Asian and Olympic Games roster, will be making her sixth Asian Championships appearance.
7. Conference on blockchain technology in Vizag
The State Government is organising a major conference here on Oct 9 and Oct 10 on blockchain technology. The technology has been identified by the Government as one with great potential and future in the IT sector.
Representatives major IT companies specializing in financial technology, over 40 startups from 20 plus countries and policy-makers from the Centre and the States as well as CEOs in banking and insurance sector have agreed to attend the conference being held at Hotel Varun Beach Novotel.
Three top winners offering solutions among the startups will be offered Rs. 5 lakh each and three runners-up Rs. 2 lakh each. Best performer from the student hackathon will be honoured at the summit being attended by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and several other VVIPs.
8. India receives first-ever shipment of US crude oil at Paradip port
India today received its first-ever shipment of US crude oil with Indian Oil Corp (IOC) importing 1.6 million barrel parcel at Paradip in Odisha. MT New Prosperity, a very large crude carrier (VLCC), with a capacity to haul two million barrels of crude, had left US Gulf Coast on August 19 and arrived at Paradip port. IOC will process the crude at its refineries located at Paradip, Haldia (in West Bengal), Barauni (in Bihar) and Bongaigaon (in Assam).
9. India Inc raises Rs. 26,720 cr via IPOs in April-Sept
Indian companies raised a record close to Rs. 27,000 crore through initial public offerings in the first half of the current fiscal and an impressive pipeline is already in place in the coming months. Besides, over a dozen firms, including New India Assurance Company, Reliance Nippon Life Asset Management and HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company, have lined up their IPOs to raise funds totalling Rs. 35,000 crore in the coming months.
10. Bandhan Bank plans to open another 60 branches
Bandhan Bank plans to open another 60 branches over the next six months as part of efforts to expand its presence across the country. Currently, bank have 840 branches and by March it should increase to 900 across the country. Meanwhile, the bank has appointed five merchant bankers, including Goldman Sachs Group and JP Morgan Chase, to manage its initial public offer (IPO).
The Reserve Bank of India’s guidelines mandated the private sector bank to get itself listed within three years from the commencement of banking operations. The had bank started its operations in August 2015. Bandhan Bank's capital adequacy ratio stood at 26 per cent as on June 30.
11. Banks assess loan exposure as Qatar crisis deepens
Qatari banks and financial institutions in neighbouring countries that have severed diplomatic and transport ties are assessing their exposure to each other and seeking to sell loans in the secondary market as the crisis threatens to deepen. Qatars economy has been under pressure since June 5 when Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt imposed travel and trade restrictions and accused Qatar of backing terrorism, a charge that Doha denies.
12. RCom, Aircel hang up on merger plans
Reliance Communications (RCom) and Aircel have called off talks to merge their mobile operations due to regulatory and legal hurdles. This casts doubts over the operators’ future as the merger was seen as vital for their survival in the competitive telecom sector. Legal and regulatory uncertainties, and various interventions by vested interests, have caused inordinate delays in receipt of relevant approvals for the proposed transaction.
13. L&T Infotech bags ‘advanced analytics’ project to catch tax evaders
The infotech arm of engineering giant Larsen & Toubro has won the ambitious initiative to use social media analytics to identify tax non-compliance. The deal is “like a $100-million project” for the firm. That is really advanced analytics. Now, that is like a $100-million deal for us. It’s not a small deal. Terming the work awarded by the Central Board of Direct Taxes as a “high volume digital deal”, the project involves creating a ‘semantic web’ where web pages are structured and tagged in such a way that can be directly read by the computers.
14. Rohit Sharma jumps to world no. 5 in ODI batsmen rankings
Indian opener Rohit Sharma jumped to world number five in the ODI batsmen rankings with a career-best rating of 790, after scoring 296 runs in the recently-concluded ODI series against Australia. Meanwhile, Indian captain Virat Kohli remained the top-ranked ODI batsman, ahead of Australia's David Warner and South Africa's AB de Villiers who complete the top three.
15. Gandhiji only Indian to be named TIME's Person of the Year
Mahatma Gandhi was named TIME Magazine's Person of the Year in 1930 and remains the only Indian to be honoured with the title. Describing him as 'Saint Gandhi', the magazine wrote that Gandhi's "1930 mark on world history will undoubtedly loom largest of all." The magazine later also included him in the list of 25 Political Icons.
16. Jeffrey C Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W Young win 2017 Nobel prize in physiology or medicine
American scientists Jeffrey C Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W Young have been awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for "discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling circadian rhythms". The circadian rhythm or body's inner clock helps regulate sleep patterns, feeding behaviour, hormone release and blood pressure. The three scientists will share the $1.1 million prize money.
17. SBI waives closing fees for accounts that are over 1 yr old
SBI has waived off account closing charges for all savings bank customers under the condition that their account has existed for over a year. The waiver came into effect on October 1. Earlier, the bank was deducting ?500 along with applicable GST as account closing charges on all accounts except for those closed during the 14-day free-look period.
18. Startup launches its first space balloon in US
US-based stratospheric flight startup World View on Saturday launched its first space balloon from its headquarters in the US. The balloons, called Stratollites are high-altitude crafts that can operate at the upper edge of Earth's atmosphere for scientific and observational purposes. The startup claims Stratollite flight platform costs a fraction of the cost of existing technology.
19. Vogue publisher Samuel 'Si' Newhouse passes away aged 89
Samuel Irving 'Si' Newhouse Jr, Chairman Emeritus of Condé Nast media company, passed away on Sunday aged 89, his family spokesperson said. Newhouse ran the company's magazine division, Condé Nast Publications, which publishes some of the world's leading magazines including Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, and the New Yorker. Bloomberg had estimated Newhouse's net worth to be $12.7 billion.
