SBI has over Rs 20,000 Crore bad loans
o SBI wrote off bad loans worth Rs 20,339 crore in 2016-17, the highest among all the public sector banks, which had a collective write off of Rs 81,683 crore for the fiscal.
o The data pertains to the period when the associate banks of SBI were not merged with it.
o Besides SBI, Punjab National Bank had a write-off of Rs 9,205 crore in 2016-17, followed by Bank of India (Rs 7,346 crore).

Centre drafts 10-city plan to clean Ganga
o The Centre has drafted a plan to check the flow of sewer water into the river Ganga by installing sewage treatment plants (STP) in 10 major cities.
o These cities reportedly contribute about 65% of the total polluted water flowing into the river.
o As per an official of National Mission for Clean Ganga, these STPs would ensure 100% sewage treatment.

Indian engineer awarded at Sci-Tech Oscars
o Vikas Sathaye, an engineer from Mumbai, is part of a four-member team that bagged the ‘Scientific and Engineering Award’ at the Oscars 2018 Scientific and Technical Awards.
o The team was honoured for the development and implementation of Shotover K1 Camera System.
o The six-axis stabilised aerial camera mount gets attached to the base of helicopters and helps in shooting steady footage.

World Government Summit 2018 held in Dubai
o The 6th edition of World Government Summit 2018 will be held in Dubai, UAE from February 11 to 13.
o The Indian delegation will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
o The summit acts as a knowledge exchange hub between government officials, thought leaders, policy makers and private sector leaders, and as an analysis platform for the future trends, issues and opportunities facing humanity.

Rohan More Swam Across Ocean Seven
o Pune-based swimmer, Rohan More became the first Asian as well as the first Indian to swim across the Ocean Seven. He is the youngest to complete it.
o He swam across the Cook Strait between North and South Islands of New Zealand in 8 hours and 37 minutes.
o With this, More becomes only the ninth person in the world to complete it. He has received the Tenzing Norgay Award.

India, Oman Sign 8 MoUs
o India and Oman have signed 8 MoUs in different areas during Modi’s maiden visit to the Gulf nation.
o Agreements were inked in the areas of defence, health and tourism.
o An MoU on legal and judicial co-operation in civil and commercial matters was also signed.
o The agreements were inked after Mr Modi held delegation-level talks with the Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said al Said in Muscat.

NITI bats for separate debt office in India
o NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar made a strong case for setting up an independent debt management office, saying better servicing of loans could lead to substantial reduction in India’s interest payments.
o At present, the government debt is managed by the RBI.
o The interest payment on the public debt is estimated to rise from Rs 5.3 lakh crore in 2017-18 to Rs 5.75 lakh in 2018-19.

Johann Johannsson Passes Away
o Acclaimed Icelandic musician and Oscar-nominated composer Johann Johannsson has passed away aged 48.
o In 2014, he was nominated for BAFTA, Grammy and Oscar awards for his score for ‘Theory of Everything,’ and won the Golden Globe award.
o Johannsson also recorded several albums of his own, including “Fordlandia” and “Orphee.”
