SBI posts a quarterly loss for in 17 years
o India’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) on Friday reported a loss of ?2,416.4 crore for the December quarter, marking its first quarterly loss in at least 17 years.
o The bank had reported a standalone profit of ?2,610 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal.
o The bank’s net interest income during the quarter rose to ?18,688 crore.
Winter Olympic Games Starts In Pyeongchang
o The 23rd Olympic Winter Games officially kicked off at Pyeongchang in South Korea. 92 countries are participating in the event.
o There will be 102 medals up for grabs in Pyeongchang, covering seven sports and 15 disciplines.
o The ceremony was directed by Song Seung-whan, a South Korean actor.
o Hosts South Korea also produced a show of unity with neighbours North Korea during the ceremony.
Only online application for education loan
o The government has directed the banks to only accept online applications for education loans in a bid to make the loan disbursement process transparent and efficient.
o The banks have also been asked to not consider any application received in physical form.
o The move also aims to tackle the delay in sanctioning of the education loans.
NHAI To Start ‘Pay As You Use’ Pilot Project
o The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will start a pilot project called “pay as you use” on the Delhi-Mumbai Highway.
o It will study and implement the ability of the system in the country.
o The project to be run for one year involves implementing a satellite-based electronic toll collection system running on GPS/GSM technology for around 500 commercial vehicles.
India won medals at Asian Para-Cycling C’ship
o The Indian contingent won a silver medal and two bronze medals at the Asian Para-Cycling Championships held in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.
o Last year’s silver medallist Divij Shah repeated his silver-winning performance while BSF soldier Harinder Singh won bronze adding to his bronze from the last year.
o New entrant Madhu Bagri, meanwhile, won bronze in hand-cycling.
Biswamohan As NPCI’s Non-Executive Chairman
o National Payments Corporation of India appointed Biswamohan Mahapatra as non-executive chairman for two years with immediate effect.
o He succeeds B Sambamurthy who was the interim chairman.
o National Payments Corporation of India is the umbrella organisation for all retail payment systems in India, which aims to allow all Indian citizens to have unrestricted access to e-payment services.
Abhilasha Kumari becomes Manipur HC’s CJ
o Justice Abhilasha Kumari is the first woman to become the chief justice of the Manipur high court.
o Justice Kumari, daughter of former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh has served as a Gujarat high court judge and chief justice of Tripura high court.
o She also served as additional advocate general of Himachal Pradesh after the Congress government came to power in March 2003.
Indra Nooyi Becomes ICC’s 1st Female Director
o PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi has been appointed as the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) first-ever independent female director.
o Nooyi will join the cricket body in June 2018 for a 2-year term.
o The introduction of an Independent Director, who must be female, was approved by the ICC in June 2017, aimed at improving the global governance of the sport.
RK Singh Launches ASH TRACK Mobile App
o Union Minister of State (IC) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri R.K Singh, launched a Web-based monitoring System and a Fly Ash mobile application named ASH TRACK.
o These platforms will enable better management of the ash produced by thermal power plants.
o It will provide an interface between fly ash producers (Thermal Power Plants) and potential ash users.
